Pop-Up Northrop: Igniting Big Ideas is a series of spontaneous pop-up events, building transformations, social objects, and an interactive online hub that together will launch Northrop’s innovative multidisciplinary programming in its revitalized facility. Northrop reopens with a Gala evening of dance, live orchestra, and sparkling festivities on April 4, 2014, and continues with many Grand Reopening events scheduled throughout April and May 2014.
As part of the Innovation Lab grant Northrop received from EmcArts, the organization is building a collaborative framework for the New Northrop and all of the new residents (Northrop, College of Design, Institute for Advanced Study, and University Honors Program) that will bring to life the vision of the New Northrop.
The spaces that will be activated through Pop-Up Northrop leading up to the activation of Northrop’s interior spaces are the building’s physical exterior, the virtual web portal, and the areas/spaces around Northrop. In an effort to develop many methods of interacting with Northrop, a new online portal will be created and hosted on Northrop’s current site. Northrop’s exterior will function as a canvas to spark gathering and discussion, including large-scaled exterior building treatments. Pop-up activities will provide an element of spectacle and intersect with the academic and cultural content happening on campus. Temporary social objects, such as a camera obscura, will be used as an invite to connect and engage, sparking people’s curiosity to encourage exploration and play. Check back often to learn more!
