A Celebration of Revelations

Robert Battle, Artistic Director
Masazumi Chaya, Associate Artistic Director

America's cultural ambassadors return with two equally explosive evenings of different rep, steeped in phenomenal cultural and artistic significance. Ailey’s return to Minnesota marks the first tour with new artistic director, Robert Battle (succeeding Judith Jamison), honored as one of the “Masters of African American Choreography” by the Kennedy Center.

Tue, May 1 Program

Home (2011), Rennie Harris
The bold hip-hop choreographer returns to the Ailey company to create a new work set to a soul-lifting score of gospel house music and inspired by the stories of people living with or affected by HIV.

Takademe
(1999), Robert Battle
One of Battle's first creations, this bravura work mixes humor and high-flying movement in a savvy deconstruction of Indian Kathak dance rhythms.

The Hunt
 (2001), Robert Battle
Artistic Director Robert Battle's athletic work for six men reveals the predatory side of human nature and the primitive thrill of the hunt.

Journey
(1958), Joyce Trisler
Joyce Trisler, one of the Ailey company's first members, set her ethereal female solo to Charles Ives's "The Unanswered Question."

Revelations
(1960), Alvin Ailey
Using African-American spirituals, song-sermons, gospel songs and holy blues--this suite fervently explores the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul.

Wed, May 2 Program

Arden Court (1981), Paul Taylor
For the first time, the Ailey dancers will perform a work by the modern American genius Paul Taylor.  Set to William Boyce's sumptuous baroque score, this romantic masterpiece has been hailed by The New York Times for "the irresistible pleasure of its dancing."

Minus 16 (1999), Ohad Naharin
A delightfully eclectic score ranging from Dean Martin to mambo, techno to traditional Israeli music propels Naharin's phenomenally inventive piece.

Revelations (1960), Alvin Ailey
Using African-American spirituals, song-sermons, gospel songs and holy blues--this suite fervently explores the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul.
