Next in the Northrop Summer Music Festival’s eclectic line-up is Steve Kaul & The Brass Kings, performing on Wednesday, July 10th at noon! This quintet composed of multi-talented musicians and vocalist Steve Kaul offer a unique style of sounds produced by old-time instruments paired with a handful of unconventional ones. Ranging from the etching melodies of a classical violin to the resophonic undertones of a homemade washtub bass, the band’s instrumental innovation conjures up a unique multicultural fusion of old-time, middle-eastern, and bluegrass music. Each member contributes a different flavor to the rich, chugging harmonics to take listeners down unchartered roads of Americana music.

Their debut album, The Brass Kings, made several top ten lists of best album’s of 2006 and their second album, Washboard Rope Guitar, made the Minneapolis Star Tribune’s top 10 list in 2008. Steve Kaul & The Brass Kings are fearless in their approach to arrangement and improvisation, blending folk music traditions into a pulsing groove of pre-industrial trance.

Come join us on a beautiful summer afternoon to experience this musical excursion of guitars, washtub bass, washboard, and fiddle. Jimmy John’s will also be providing free sandwich samples at the concert—don’t miss out on the free food and the free outdoor concert!

Here’s a sneak preview video of a live performance from Steve Kaul & The Brass Kings on KFAI—experience their music yourself at 12:00 – 1:00pm, Wednesday, July 10th at the Northrop Plaza.

See you there!
