Northrop's Music season opens this fall with Larry Ochs Sax & Drumming Core, the funkiest free jazz coming out of the California Bay Area. This show is copresented for an exciting first time with The Whole Music Club in Coffman Memorial Union, an intimate club-like venue new to the Northrop Jazz series. In November, Northrop and Walker Art Center copresent the astonishingly versatile Dafnis Prieto Sextet, headed by the up-and-coming Cuban drummer himself. The music season proceeds with what many deem as one of the world's best choirs, the 32-member Swedish Radio Choir, spanning genres with contemporary, baroque, gospel, and folk a capella choral music. Then it's back to jazz with premier violinist Regina Carter's Reverse Thread as she evokes the old and new to celebrate international identities, keeping true to the flavor of her distinct musical career. Later in the season, Panamanian pianist Danilo Perez & Friends bring a tribute project called Things to Come - 21st Century Dizzy, with a globally diverse band full of leading edge jazz musicians.
