Artist Interview with Tania Pérez-Salas

Unparalleled
in the world of Mexican contemporary dance, Tania Pérez-Salas' rich, theatrical
imagination makes the stage a magical place full of strange, arresting
sights. Her choreography draws
from her passion for literature and her musical choices range from Bach and
Vivaldi to rock.  But the most
stunning element of her work is her haunting visual and surrealistic imagery,
which includes dreamlike video projections, extravagant props and dramatic
lighting. Helping to launch the U of M focus on Mexico 2010, Pérez-Salas will discuss
her latest work, Ex-Stasis (2010),
which focuses on living in Mexico and being caught between tradition and the
ultra modernist 21st Century, and Waters
of Forgetfulness
(1998), a reflection on water's vital role in life as inspired
by Ivan Illich's essay.
