The evening begins with famed choreographer Alvin Ailey's The Lark Ascending, a choreographic interpretation of a young girl's maturation, set to English composer Ralph Vaughn Williams' lush orchestration.

Next is In the Mirror of Her Mind, a powerful work created in 2011 by Christopher Huggins to benefit Dancers Responding to AIDS.

Following In the Mirror of Her Mind is the ground-breaking 1957 collaboration between famed choreographer George Balanchine and composer Igor Stravinsky. Agon is universally regarded as a masterwork that redefined ballet in its time; depicting scenes from 17th-century French court dances.

Closing out the evening is Return, a quintessential Dance Theatre of Harlem ballet, featuring the songs of Aretha Franklin and James Brown.

Dance Theatre of Harlem was founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and the late Karel Shook. Mitchell, the first African American dancer to become a principle dancer with a major U. S. ballet company (New York City Ballet), believed in the power of training in a classical art form to bring discipline and focus to a challenged community. Dance Theatre of Harlem’s unprecedented success is built on creating innovative and bold new forms of artistic expression.

Now celebrating its 45th year, the internationally acclaimed Dance Theatre of Harlem remains committed to the excellence that has sustained it over the years.
