Northrop Access Statement

Northrop invites, welcomes, and honors people of all abilities to engage with and enjoy our programs and spaces in an inclusive, accessible environment. Accessible Drop-off Area, Entrances, and Parking

Accessible Drop-off Area

This is a temporary passenger loading area for drop-off and pick-up with direct, no-elevation entrance into Northrop. It is located on the east side of Northrop.

Take a right turn from Church Street at Lily Plaza immediately before the Church Street Garage entrance. View the accessible entrance on Google Maps.

 Accessible Entrances

These provide physical access into Northrop from public sidewalks with no-elevation entrances or by ramp or elevator.

Find these on the east, south, and west sides of the building. If entering from the south (plaza) side, there is an ADA-compliant elevator located in the southeast corner. Accessible backstage entrances are also available.

 Accessible Parking

These parking stalls are marked with signage indicating additional space on both sides of the vehicle. The University provides designated accessible parking across campus, including in the parking structures nearest Northrop, which include the Church Street Garage and Fourth Street Ramp.

Optional prepaid parking reservations are available for most Northrop performances and can be purchased online or through the Box Office. Learn about transportation options from University Paratransit Services.

 American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter

During events at Northrop, an interpreter will stand on or near the stage to translate the experience.

Request at time of purchase or at least two weeks in advance of event by contacting nrpaccess@umn.edu.

Assistive Listening Device (ALD)

These devices amplify and clarify sound by cutting down or eliminating ambient noise.

Request in advance by emailing nrpaccess@umn.edu or from coat check attendants on the day of the event. If coat check is not staffed for an event, any usher will be able to assist with this request. Please note the ALDs are not compatible with hearing aids.

Captioning

Like subtitles, the captioning service features words that are written and displayed in real time across various formats.

Request at least two weeks in advance by emailing nrpaccess@umn.edu.

Certified Service Animals

Also called assistance or helper animals, these certified working animals have been trained to perform tasks that assist people with disabilities.

Certified service animals are welcome at Northrop anytime. Seating accommodations can be arranged by contacting the Box Office at 612-624-2345 or umntix@umn.edu.

Changing Tables

A fold-down raised platform designed to allow a person to change a child's diaper.

Find these on the east and west sides of the Ground Floor level, as well as the east sides of Level 2 and Level 4.

Courtesy Transport Wheelchair

Northrop offers these wheelchairs for temporary use and are intended for transport only.

Request in advance by emailing nrpaccess@umn.edu or from Coat Check attendants on the day of the event. If Coat Check is not staffed for an event, any usher will be able to assist with this request.

Foot-Washing Station

These floor-level sinks provide a place to wash feet in privacy and are availabe for use by anyone.

The nearest foot washing station is in Room 208 Coffman Memorial Union. This location is a 3-minute walk from Northrop. Open walking directions in Google Maps.

Gender Inclusive Restrooms

These private, single-stall restrooms are available for use by anyone and also contain a changing table.

Find these on the east and west sides of the Ground Floor level, as well as the east sides of Level 2 and Level 4.

Lactation Space

A private space for mothers to nurse or use a breast pump. Although Northrop does not have a permanently designated space, a private space with access to electricity can be provided.

Request at any time before the performance by emailing nrpaccess@umn.edu or reaching out to an usher.

Large Print Programs

Available for Northrop Season events, the text in these printed programs is a larger point size for easier readability.

Request from Coat Check attendants on the day of the event or by inquiring with an usher. For a digital copy, please email umntix@umn.edu in advance of the event.

Accessible Seating Options

Accessible Transfer Seats

These fixed seats inside the theater have an arm that swings out, making it easier to transfer from a wheelchair to the seat.

These moveable chairs inside the theater do not have fixed location or armrests.

These spaces in the theater are located among other patrons with enough room to provide your own seated chair.
