#BirdsTellUs: The pivotal role that 47 million birders can play in addressing the climate crisis.

We are facing a climate crisis of epic proportions—one that threatens life on Earth as we know it. For people and birds to have any chance of adapting, the response needs to be no less massive. Audubon’s Survival by Degrees Climate Report revealed that 65% of North American bird species are at risk of extinction. To protect the birds we love, we must win on climate. At the heart of Audubon’s movement is a powerful coalition of people connected by conservation, climate, and the power of birds. Birds tell us – and we lead by learning, listening, and acting.

Marshall Johnson is the chief conservation officer for Audubon, an environmental organization dedicated to the conservation of birds and their natural habitats. He leads strategic direction for hemispheric-wide conservation work at Audubon to address the biodiversity crisis facing birds.

A University of Minnesota Crookston alum, Marshall served as vice-chair of the Student Senate in the University of Minnesota system. He received the University’s Abbey–Young Alumni Award in 2021. Johnson resides in Fargo, North Dakota. Kathryn Hoffman, chief executive officer of the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy, will be in conversation with Johnson after the keynote address.
