Back by popular demand, contemporary Brazilian dance superstars Grupo Corpo return with an evening of Northrop premieres. Not seen in Minnesota for nearly 10 years, Grupo Corpo and choreographer Rodrigo Pederneiras have reinvented classical ballet as an exuberant and rhythmic dance form, infused with Brazilian dance rhythms. The group’s distinctive artistic achievements, identity, and popularity have been the fruits of a long, arduous journey.

Sem Mim, meaning “without me,” is an ebbing and flowing ballet, performed in nude colored unitards tattooed with inscriptions from the Middle Ages. A soothing, rocking original score, inspired by a medieval Galician-Portuguese songbook, tells of women who mourn the absence and celebrate the return of lovers from sea. Ímã, or “magnet,” is a kinetic, exuberant exploration of attraction and repulsion amidst an ever-changing array of radiant colored light, set to the driving, multi-instrumental sounds of Brazilian trio +2.
