The toast of Montreal since the arrival of Gradimir Pankov as artistic director in 2000, this gorgeous ensemble of 35 dancers gracefully balances commitment to classical tradition and a willingness to innovate. Pankov, a Macedonian dancer and master teacher who had headed European companies including Nederlands Dans Theater II, the National Ballet of Finland, Sweden’s Cullberg Ballet, and Ballet of the Grand Theatre in Geneva, has changed the company’s focus to new European choreography and revitalized the roster with dancers whose classical technique is complemented by artistic individuality. This engagement holds a trio of Jirí Kylián neoclassical ballets. Abstract and theatrical, they employ classical technique at almost break-neck speed, demanding perfection of the dancers.

About the Company

Les Grands Ballets Canadiens was founded in 1957 by Ludmilla Chiriaeff. In earlier years dazzling productions of classic ballets including Giselle and Swan Lake were the chief focus. Then came an admirable era in which the company’s repertoire featured ballets by internationally recognized choregraphers. Now Mr. Pankov’s vision and leadership have vaulted the ensemble of compelling dancers to the ranks of the ballet world’s thrilling forces and promptingThe New York Times to call today’s artistry “breathtaking.” In addition to emerging as a revitalized gem in its own rights, the company has also become a presenter of other sterling companies.
