Martha Graham has had a deep and lasting impact on American art and culture. She single-handedly defined contemporary dance as a uniquely American art form, which the nation has in turn shared with the world. Crossing artistic boundaries, she collaborated with and commissioned work from the leading visual artists, musicians, and designers of her day, including sculptor Isamu Noguchi and composers Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, and Gian Carlo Menotti.

Graham’s groundbreaking style grew from her experimentation with the elemental movements of contraction and release. By focusing on the basic activities of the human form, she enlivened the body with raw, electric emotion. The sharp, angular, and direct movements of her technique were a dramatic departure from the predominant style of the time.

Bonus! Martha Graham Dance Company Residency

This spring, the Martha Graham Dance Company and Northrop Presents is partnering to bring an exciting opportunity to dance students in the U of M’s Department of Theatre Arts and Dance. Thanks to generous support from the National Endowment of the Arts, the Company will engage 38 students in a two and a half week residency that will culminate in a performance of the classic Graham piece Panorama.

While in residency, a Graham artist will teach technique, offer question and answer sessions, and set Panorama with the 33 students who will appear in the final performance (eight will be understudies). Rehearsals will be held five to six times per week leading up to the final performances.

Through this unique partnership, the dance students will have the full experience of participating as professional dancers. From assigned dressing rooms, to wearing Graham costumes, to participating in technical rehearsals, and performing alongside this renowned company, this residency is an unparalleled learning opportunity for students.
