A: Yes, you may increase or decrease your ticket number as much as you need to prior to the reservation deadline as long as there is the seating capacity to do so.

If the reservation deadline has passed and you need to increase your ticket number, please contact matinees@umn.edu for assistance on a case-by-case basis, depending on how many seats are still available. If your ticket number has decreased, we only need to know if your numbers have decreased by 20 tickets or more.

A: No. Student Matinees that occur during the standard school day are for schools and homeschools only. Northrop invites senior living facilities who provide memory care services to participate in some student matinees, but these programs are not open to the general public.

A: Schools are seated as they arrive by our Front of House staff. Schools who need access to Northrop’s Accessibility Services, and who notify Northrop in advance about their access needs, will be prioritized in the seating process.

A: Visit Northrop’s Accessibility Services page to learn more.

A: Visit Northrop’s Parking & Directions page to learn more.

A: Bus drivers should follow directions from University of Minnesota Police Department (UMPD) officers, who will direct your bus to one of three approved bus parking zones.

These zones are within one block of Northrop, and your school can unload in these zones. Please refer to the Busing, Arrival and Departure document that will be shared with you about four weeks prior to your visit, which includes a map showing the bus zones and walkways to Northrop.

Note: Northrop cannot assign specific bus zones.

A: Bus drivers should follow directions from UMPD officers, who will direct your bus to one of three approved bus parking zones. These zones are within one block of Northrop and your school can unload in these Zones. Your bus can stay parked there for the duration of the performance and your group can return for pick up in the same spot. We prefer that buses stay parked in a bus zone during the performance if possible, so that schools know exactly where to go after the show.

Please refer to the Busing, Arrival and Departure document that will be shared with you about four weeks prior to your visit, which includes a map showing the bus zones and walkways to Northrop.

Note: Northrop cannot assign specific bus zones.

A: Front of House staff will sequentially dismiss groups in sections. Your group should return to the same bus parking zone where you were dropped off, unless you have an Access Bus Pass for accessibility needs. See the below question for more info.

A: The Lilly Plaza turnaround is for accessibility drop offs and pick ups only, and your school must have Northrop’s Access Bus Pass printed and displayed on your bus in order to use this area. Otherwise, bus parking is not allowed in this area, which has high pedestrian traffic. Only the buses from schools who have pre-communicated accessibility needs can use this area. UMPD will not direct any buses without access passes to this area.

To request an Access Bus Pass, email matinees@umn.edu

A: All 2026-27 Northrop Student Matinees will begin at 10:30 a.m. and run for approximately 60 minutes in length, which includes a Q&A with the performing artists if time allows.

A. No, the student matinee performances do not have an intermission.

A: If weather allows, there are outdoor spaces with tables throughout campus that are free to use. However, we are unable to provide indoor space for your school group to eat lunch.

A: Please contact Northrop Education Program Manager Cristina Castro at 612-626-4048 or castr065@umn.edu. You can also email matinees@umn.edu.

Providing Access to the Arts

Northrop proudly engages students in meaningful experiences that expand their worldview and provide the hope and joy the arts offer through its K-12 matinee program. The program provides students and educators high-quality and affordable arts programming with expanded access online and flexible on-demand options that fit school schedules. Each performance is augmented with additional study materials that meet learning standards, as well as resources to guide students about arts performances.

Access To Arts Education Matters

  • Research shows that children who study the arts demonstrate stronger overall academic performance, helping to produce creative thinkers that employers need in an increasingly complex workforce.

  • K-12 students involved with the arts show higher levels of success in math and reading skills, and additional skills are strengthened in communication and problem-solving abilities.

  • Exposure to the arts help K-12 students improve ACT/SAT test scores, perform higher on standardized tests, and achieve higher GPAs. These students are less likely to drop out of school and three times more likely to receive a bachelor's degree in higher education.

  • Both state and federal laws require K-12 schools to provide arts education for students to foster a more well-rounded education.
