With the announcement of the 2020-21 Northrop Season on Tue, Aug 4, Northrop proudly offers a variety of in-person events that follow a strict set of safety measures. With these protocols, Northrop is confident that when you feel ready to return to an event, we’re ready with the latest cleaning techniques, the highest standards customer service, and a superbly trained staff. Your safety has been the most important consideration to offering these performances.
These recommended steps, outlined below, follow the guidelines of the CDC and MN Department of Health, the Stay Safe MN Guidelines for Reopening Seated Entertainment, and the Event Safety Alliance Reopening Guide For Event Professionals During the COVID-19 Pandemic. They comply with the University of Minnesota Sunrise Plan and the Facilities Management Sunrise Support Plan and were officially approved by the University Health and Safety department as a condition of re-opening. Northrop also consulted with professionals in health, safety, HVAC systems, cleaning protocols, other cultural institutions locally and nationally for the latest measures.
BEFORE ATTENDING A PERFORMANCE
Prior to arrival, staff and guests will be asked to conduct a health check. You will be asked to self-screen for COVID-19 symptoms using the Stay Safe MN Visitor and Employee Health Screening Checklist. Patrons will be reminded to wash hands often, get tested and stay home when ill or exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, maintain physical distance, and wear a mask.
Patrons who show symptoms of illness will be asked to stay home and call the box office for assistance with their ticket options. As a general safety precaution, a checklist will be included in the pre-event email and posted at venue entrances. Patrons exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 during their visit will be asked to leave the venue. These reminders will be placed on signage throughout the facility and included in emails before the event.
RESERVING TICKETS AND EVENT DETAILS
The State of Minnesota currently limits theater capacity to no more than 250 patrons. In a venue with 2,700 seats, Northrop has the flexibility to spread out seating assignments throughout all four levels.
Patrons will be seated by household, in groups of six or less, with no less than six feet between groups in all directions. The box office staff will assign seats approximately one week in advance of each performance.
Northrop’s exchange, donation, and refund policy for events in the 2020-21 Season is flexible and full of options, giving you the ability to convert your in-person ticket to a live stream ticket, exchange your ticket for another performance, support Northrop by donating the value of your ticket, or request a refund.
Patrons attending general admission events will be seated by the usher staff on a
first-come, first-served basis that adheres to all physical distancing guidelines.
The theater doors will open one hour prior to each event to allow for ample seating time.
Many Northrop Presents artists have shortened their performances and eliminated intermissions to reduce lobby and restroom congestion during breaks.
All Northrop Presents Performance Previews will be recorded and offered online only, starting the day before each performance. All Northrop films and many engagement activities also have been converted to online only experiences until further notice.
On days with two performances, a minimum of one hour between shows will be required for cleaning.
Patrons will be encouraged to pre-purchase parking to minimize contact at parking facilities.
All patrons will be strongly encouraged to use mobile tickets, delivered to their personal devices.
WHILE AT NORTHROP
It is both University of Minnesota policy and State of Minnesota policy that everyone wear face coverings indoors. Northrop’s staff and all patrons will be asked to comply with this policy. If a patron arrives without a mask, masks will be available at the box office for $1.
Northrop has been working very closely with University of Minnesota Facilities Management (FM) on cleaning and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) protocols for our building. FM will be performing enhanced cleaning for public spaces including restrooms, door push bars and handles, stair railings, elevator buttons, and other high touch areas. Northrop’s entire HVAC system was replaced during the 2011-2014 renovation and is state of the art. The UMN HVAC team has programmed our system to run continuously and ventilate per ASHRAE 62.1-2019 Table 6-1. Outdoor air ventilation will be increased beyond ASHRAE 62.1-2019 Table 6-1 and filtration will be improved to MERV-13.
Northrop has acquired misters that will allow FM to disinfect the theater seats efficiently and effectively between performances.
Hand sanitizer stations will be available at each building entrance. They will be refilled regularly.
Public drinking fountains will be out of service, but touchless water bottle filling stations will be available and cleaned daily, so please bring your water bottles.
Elevator occupancy will be limited. Stair use will be encouraged.
Surdyk’s Café will be closed until further notice following the current Industry Guidance for Safely Reopening: Restaurants & Bars.
Digital programs will replace printed programs and will be emailed to patrons ahead of each performance and available on Northrop’s website.

As we continue to monitor the immense impact COVID-19 is having worldwide, and in response to recommendations by the state of Minnesota and the University of Minnesota to protect our students, staff, patrons, and visitors, Northrop has temporarily closed its building to the public and made additional changes. These difficult decisions are in addition to last week’s announcement that Northrop has canceled all events through Apr 30, which has since been extended by the University to include all events through the end of Spring semester, May 13.
Among the latest updates:
- Northrop’s building is closed until further notice.
- Surdyk's Café within Northrop is also closed until further notice; however please consider helping this local business by utilizing their Surdyk’s at Home meal-delivery service.
- Walk-up service at the Northrop Box Office is closed until further notice.
- The Northrop Box Office is still available to assist you by calling 612-625-5306 and leaving a message, or emailing email@example.com All messages are being monitored and returned Mon-Fri, 10:00 am-5:00 pm.
- Ticket holders to performances that have been canceled have three options and can contact the Box Office by Apr 19 to make their choice:
- All Northrop staff are working remotely but continue to monitor emails and voice messages to quickly respond to inquiries.
- Non-ticketing questions or concerns can continue to be directed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Please join us in supporting today’s Minnesota Virtual Arts Advocacy Day and also request that your members of Congress include $4 billion in its COVID-19 relief funding package—to be distributed through the National Endowment for the Arts—to help offset the losses of the nonprofit arts industry already estimated at $3.2 billion today. This will help to ensure artists, entrepreneurs, and small businesses in the creative economy can utilize business interruption relief.

We at Northrop and the University of Minnesota have been closely monitoring the development of COVID-19. The health and safety of our students, patrons, artists, partners, faculty, and staff are our top priority. In that spirit, and with the University following the recommendation of the state of Minnesota, we have made the difficult decision to cancel all events at Northrop through Apr 30. As a performing arts institution with the mission of bringing performing arts and educational experiences to our community, we do not make this decision lightly but we know that this is the right path forward for all of us. All major venues at the University, systemwide, are closed to the public, and events will be canceled, rescheduled, or moved online where possible. We are working closely with public health officials and will regularly assess the ongoing need for these restrictions.
Performance cancellations are having a profound effect on the financial health of performing arts institutions and artists world-wide. While Northrop is working with our artists to schedule another performance in the future, at this time we are offering three options for ticket-holders of canceled performances — tax-deductible donation, exchange for a gift certificate, or full refund.
